Line ‘em up! December 11, 2008

Here by popular demand is the entire line up of pups. All six of them.

We are expecting their eyes to open any day now. As you know, puppies are born blind and deaf. I mention this because last night, in an effort to calm down the puppies, my wife turned on the music channel on our Dish Network to something soothing so they would fall back to sleep. She could have put on the Susa March Channel for all they cared, but it made her feel better.

They are growing rapidly and soon we will have to joy of them running all over the place. Wait, that means I’m going to have to chase them. I’m really getting to old for this much fun and frivolity!

Six puppies

Ok, you try to pose six puppies!

Here is Toby (Dad) in his favorite position... hanging around my shoulder.

There was a time when we could actually sleep at night. I think it was early last week.

The puppies and mom like to squawk all night long. And I mean all night long.  How can such small bodies make so much noise. Jessie (mom) doesn’t help much, when they get to crying, she gets spastic and starts running around. It’s like a three-ring circus without the popcorn (I get very hungry when I’m woke up at 3:30am.) I  feel like I’m in the middle of a political convention and someone just said the word “ethics”.

The trouper of the whole thing, besides my wife’s incredible patience, is Toby (dad). He just does what he can and keeps on smiling.

I wonder if Radio Shack makes puppy volume controls?

Here is the trouble maker of the 6 new pups. We call him Little Bear. We were calling him “piggie”, but I didn’t want our 5 year-old grandson to think it was OK to call someone a “piggie”.

This pup never stops eating! And what makes this worse is, he drains mom so there’s nothing left for anyone else. We finally had to go to Petco and get puppy formula and little tiny baby bottles and start feeding him separately. We finally got his belly full and he has decided to stop squealing for food 24/7. I’m not sure, but I thought I had gotten old enough to get away from bottle feeding. Oh well!

Mom and Dad are doing well and Grandma is getting a little sleep (she’s a real trouper). Who would have thought that such little fur balls could be so much work?

I do feel a little sorry for the Dad (the miniature Dachshund)… he’s having a hard time passing out cigars.

Loan me a puppy. December 6, 2008

I have a basic rule about puppies and the distribution of same. I don’t sell puppies, I loan them out. If I let someone have a puppy they have to make a promise… if for any reason they can’t keep the puppy, they have to return it to me. You’re not allowed to give it to someone else or to the Humane Society. Also, you have to go through my interview process to determine if you have a good home. I guess I’m a little nutty, but I want to make sure that they are always taken good care of.

Another of my rules is that I won’t take all the puppies away from the mom. She gets to keep one.

Years ago, we had puppies with our Cocker Spaniel, Casey. Joyce decided that Casey would keep the runt of the litter, a little girl we named Blossom. As time went by and the other pups were “loaned out”, I kept my eye on a goofy little fur ball that we had named Micah (after Micah Barnes of the Canadian singing group, The Nylons). He was clumsy and nutty and as cute as can be. It became evident that Joyce wasn’t going to give up Blossom and I couldn’t give up Micah, so we ended up with three wonderful pups that lived long, happy lives. This time I’m sticking to my guns, only one puppy. The little tan girl… unless that little black one keeps making me laugh… please stop me!

We decided that when you cross a Cocker Spaniel / Shi-tzu mix and a Dachshund you get a litter of Cocadacatzus. And they’re as cute as a button.

Toby woke us up barking and running to the door of the bedroom. He sleeps with us while Jessie has her bed in the great room. Her choice. When we let him out we found out what the fuss was about. Jessie wad cleaning her first puppy and Toby had heard the little “squeaking” of a new born. The delivery went well. She had a puppy every couple of hours with the last one being born around 6pm. Things went well and we were the proud grandparents of 5 little pups. Mom is fine and Dad is the proud Papa checking each one out and even helping mom with cleaning fur and answering the call of squeaks for reassurance.

By 10pm, everything was cleaned up, new blankets in the whelping box and we were ready to go to bed. That is until Jessie decided to have one more puppy. Four hours after everyone else was born, one final pup came into the family. Three girls and Three boys. Three black (like their mom), one white (that looks like a Cocker Spaniel), one tan and white and one tan like you would expect from a dachshund.

I finally went to bed at 12:30am while grandma slept on the couch with Sarah, our granddaughter who came up from Townville to help wih the birthin’.

Well, all is well and we start the adoption process. More on that tomorrow. I’m a real pain about this.

Our male dog, Toby, started barking this morning. We knew he didn’t have to go out. He just kept barking and running out of the room. Upon investigation, we heard a soft “squeeking” and there in the box with Jessie was a brand new puppy. Well, the fun has begun!

So far, we’ve had 3 puppies with an additional 2-3 expected. I’ll post more information tomorrow. I’m busy boiling water and getting bed sheets… I don’t know nuttin about birthin’ no babies!

I’m still recovering from a partial foot amputation (a long story for another day). This means that I have to wear a cam walker, a cast-like device held over from the torture days of the Spanish Inquisition. This lovely devise makes it hard to stand up and sit down better yet walking upright.

Joyce and I went to Wegman’s on Peach Street to do a little shopping. I like Wegman’s for the selection, the prices and the motorized carts. When Joyce went to drop me off at the door, it was snowing and blowing. As I opened the door and started to get out, two young men working in the parking lot rounding up carts approached the car. The first one asked if I needed help getting out of the car as the other one offered to go get me a cart. I was impressed. Both of them offered to go above and beyond their duties to help.

It’s nice to see that we are still raising young people who show respect and are willing to make that extra effort. I should have gotten their names, but I wasn’t thinking that clearly.

If these two are representative of their generation, we’re in pretty good shape.

P.S. Try Wegman’s Salsa… it’s great

What do you get when… ? December 2, 2008

Here’s a question for you. What do you get when you cross a Cocker Spaniel / Shi-tzu mix with a Miniature Dachshund? I don’t know either, but we’ll know in 8 days.

Our little Jessie (named after Jessie Rubinfield) had her “time” and my wife said, “Don’t worry about Toby (our nine month old mini dachshund), he’s too young and short to “catch” her.” Well, my wife underestimates the power of a determined male. Toby is going to be a father. The vet saw 5 puppies on the x-ray and possibly one hiding. I didn’t know puppies were camera shy.

So, she’ll haver her pups, we’ll keep one (I refuse to take all the puppies from the mother. She gets to keep one. That’s my rule.), my son Todd will get one and the rest will be given to good homes (more later on my adoption policy).

All I know is… we’re going to be parents!
